Roku ships two very different remotes, and the fix depends on which one you have. Sort that out first and this is usually quick.
Which remote is it?
- Simple remote — no microphone, no pairing button, works only when pointed at the device. This is infrared: it needs a clear line of sight.
- Enhanced / voice remote — has a pairing button inside the battery compartment (and often a mic and volume buttons on the side). This one works over Wi-Fi Direct and can be re-paired.
1. Fresh batteries
As always, start here. A weak battery causes exactly the “sometimes works, sometimes doesn’t” behaviour people describe. Replace both.
2. Re-pair the enhanced remote
If yours has the pairing button:
Open the battery compartment, hold the pairing button for about five seconds with the Roku switched on, until the remote’s light flashes. Wait for the on-screen confirmation.
3. Restart the Roku
A quick power cycle clears a stuck connection:
Unplug the Roku (or Roku TV) at the wall for about ten seconds, then plug it back in and try the remote once it’s booted.
4. Line of sight (simple remotes)
An infrared simple remote needs to see the Roku’s sensor. Make sure nothing is in front of the device, and that bright sunlight or certain LED lights aren’t hitting the sensor and drowning out the signal.
Use your phone in the meantime
You don’t have to sit in the dark while you fix this. On the same Wi-Fi, the official Roku app or Zapp turns your phone into a full remote — with your Roku’s real app icons and real input names, and no subscription. Many people keep using it even after the plastic remote comes back.
